March 2010

HELLO EVERYONE:

As we approach our six year anniversary, (May), it is time to take a pause and reflect on six very hectic years. When we opened our doors in 2004 with our first vintage (2003) we had 4 wines, 3 small tanks, 12 barrels, a hand operated corker, a small wine pump, a tiny crusher and a wood basket press. Our capacity was 400 cases and didn’t expect to grow too fast. Since then we added many large tanks, several medium tanks and variety of smaller tanks increasing our fermentation capacity to 8,000+ cases, added new buildings for production and bottled wine storage area, an event center, a new barrel aging area, purchased a two ton press, a nine tons per hour crusher/destemmer, a bottling system, large capacity pumps, 6 ton fork lift, large filters, and other machinery that occupies large portions of real estate. The result of all these acquisitions is that you can now choose among 20 or so different wines when you stop by the tasting room.

Many of you still ask me “how much do you want to grow?” Well… the answer is “I don’t really know.” I like to think that we can still grow and keep the intimate and friendly atmosphere that has characterized our winery. The moment that the business itself becomes just a business and not the warm and family place that it is today, then it is time to scale back and stop growing.

All of this growth comes at a price; not only financially but also physically and emotionally. The stress created by the demands of a vibrant winery is at times overwhelming. But, one of the joys of being at the winery is people watching and one person that I have observed over the last few years is my good friend Harry Williams. I recalled a time a couple of years ago when the pressure of taxes, finances, new plantings, trying to anticipate the harvest and other items was really getting to me. I became increasingly frustrated and screamed at Maria, (in a nice way), “I want to be like Harry!!!” “You see” I told her, “Harry sees the world differently. No matter what kind of day he had, he always says his day is fantastic. He treats everyone in a cheerful manner, sees everyone with the same kind eyes and he is always ready to help not matter what or when you ask for his help. Harry doesn’t worry about what he can’t control and doesn’t get down by the pressures of every day’s life. He doesn’t seem to get caught up in the rat race and I don’t know how to get off the track! I want to be like Harry!” I said again.

After some thinking, I think the world would be a better place if we were all a little like Harry. I think I will declare March 2010 Harry's month and make a t-shirt with the slogan “Be like Harry” and when people ask, we will spread the word, “be nice to others, always see the positive side of life, be ready to help, don’t worry about you can’t control and drink San Martino wine moderately but drink it often.” I like that!
